Recipe: Tangerine Gin Fizz

While I've most definitely been an avid participant in cocktail hour and an enthusiastic supporter of day drinking for as long as I can remember, it's only within the last year or so that I've really gotten into mixing my own cocktails at home. Yes, this is despite the fact that we've had a fully stocked liquor cabinet since Mario and I moved into our current place six years ago (and yes, that liquor cabinet has practically doubled in size since then). As much as I've always loved drinking cocktails, I was just really, really lazy about making them. However, thanks to the influence of my fancy mixologist friends, a switch flipped in me around this time last year, and I am now officially a cocktail-mixing wizard! (Okay, maybe wizard is a bit of an exaggeration... let's go with neophyte cocktail genie).

Given my newfound love of at-home mixology, when the good folks at Tropicana contacted me to offer an opportunity to come up with my own cocktail for a girls night in using their Tangerine Lemonade, you know I took one look at their offer and sent back an emphatic "hell, yes!!" (in a much more professional tone, of course). I mean, how could I pass up such a perfect opportunity considering my cocktail genius status? ;-) Seriously though, as soon as I started thinking about what would pair well with the Tropicana Tangerine Lemonade, tons of different options starting floating through my head. Tropicana's Tangerine Lemonade has that perfect balance of sweet and tart, which makes it the ultimate mixer (plus, it's delicious on its own - yay for leftovers!).

After a bit of trial and error (and one very tipsy afternoon of taste-testing!), I finally settled on a lovely cocktail that has a bright pop of summer from the Tangerine Lemonade, along with an aromatic herbal component that feels very appropriate for the colder months. Bring on girls night!

Tangerine Gin Fizz

INGREDIENTS
5 oz Tropicana Tangerine Lemonade
2 oz Gin
3 dashes Angostura bitters
Club soda
Tangerine peel (or orange peel) and rosemary for garnish

DIRECTIONS
1. In a cocktail shaker, mix Tropicana Tangerine Lemonade, gin, and Angostura bitters. Use a high-quality gin that is citrusy and not too piney; I prefer Hendrick's Gin, Plymouth's English Gin, Tanqueray No. Ten London Gin, Ransom Old Tom Gin, or Few Spirits American Gin.

2. Pour over ice cubes and top with a splash of club soda.

3. Garnish with rosemary (lightly bruise rosemary leaves to release the oils) and tangerine peel.

 Cheers!

Disclosure: I partnered with my friends at Megan Media and Tropicana to facilitate this post. Review and all opinions are my own.
