Deep-Fried Cookie Dough

It all started in the mid-90s when that crazy dude in Scotland decided to serve his customers a deep-fried Mars bar as a joke... little did he know that he would start a deep-fried trend that would move beyond the basic candy bar and expand to some seemingly unthinkable combinations (deep-fried Kool-Aid balls!?).

I generally try to avoid fried foods due to the fact that I don't have a gallbladder (too much fried food can do some ugly things to me) and also because I'm really not a huge fan of most fried things. Of course, there are some exceptions to my fried food avoidance: cheese curds, mozzarella sticks, mac-n-cheese fritters (sensing a theme here?), and calamari. I will also occasionally indulge in a special something or other at a street fair. While my poison of choice is usually the funnel cake, I am also always tempted to try some of the trendier/latest desserts to hit the deep-fried circuit.

Unfortunately, I almost always end up disappointed with my fried desserts (back to the "not a huge fan of fried foods" factor). I was pleasantly surprised by the deep-fried Oreo I had a few years ago (it was like eating a piece of rich chocolate cake covered in fluffy cake batter) and also by the fried avocado bites I encountered last year (avocado fried in corn-dog batter with herb-infused dipping oil). This year's selection, deep-fried cookie dough, definitely fell into the disappointing category.

The chocolate chip cookie dough was wrapped in a sweet wonton wrapper, drizzled with chocolate, and covered in powdered sugar; it was served with a side of vanilla ice cream. It smelled delicious, but it was actually fairly unremarkable. I don't know if it was because the cookie dough was too warm when they dropped it in the fryer or because the chocolate chips all liquefied, but the insides contained a somewhat unpleasant mixture of greasy, runny dough. There were some smaller chunks of dough that hadn't completely melted and those pieces were actually pretty good; however, I feel like I would have said the same thing about some raw cookie dough from a package mixed with ice cream.

While I don't foresee any more street fair deep-fried cookie dough in my future, I'm not completely opposed to trying another version of it. This deep-fried cookie dough with fleur de sel actually sounds quite delicious!

Have you succumbed to the deep-fried food craze? If so, what have you tried? Anything you really loved or hated?

  1. Deep-fried Kool-Aid??? OMG.

I do love deep-friend fair food. The best I've ever had was the deep-friend Snickers bar--it was so gooey and sweet! The weirdest is probably the deep-fried alligator on a stick--basically tasted like chicken in batter. :)

  2. Deep fried food is not really my cup of tea either.... Especially deep fried desserts... They end up tasting too oily and overtly crispy :S
I once had a deep fried banana and it was awful!!!!!

  3. @weary prof: I know, right?!

@Cakewhiz: Yes! It's definitely the oily factor for me - the desserts always seem extra greasy.

  4. I've never tried any of these deep-fried deserts. And I suspect I'm not really missing anything. But thanks for the "fooditorial" (food editorial).

  5. We both like the taste of deep fried things just fine and our gallbladders are intact. However, in order to keep our hearts and arteries intact, we usually avoid all things fried. Our one indulgence, however, is funnel cake. That was my favorite thing growing up and I'm afraid I've gotten Brian into the habit as well. There are a few large summer street fairs in Manhattan and we'll usually head on over and search for the funnel cake stand. At least we only get one and share it! :)

  6. Hmmm, don't know if I'd like the deep fried thing. Although, it would probably go over well in my neck of the woods.

  8. @Anita: Funnel cakes are the best fair food ever! Just don't eat one on a windy day - I learned my lesson when I ended up with a ridiculous amount of powdered sugar up my nose (and not to mention all over my clothes)!

@the actor's diet: Awesome! I want to try it just for the novelty of it all... I'm sure I'll like it way more than most fried desserts because there are no runny insides. Also, that Chicken Indian Fry Bread looks amazing!

  10. First, those look amazing!

Next, I'm unfortunately a huge fan of the deep-fried food craze... and my favorite would have to be the deep-fried Oreos. I had fried Twinkies at the local fair last year, and they were pretty good -- but the Oreos easily won out! (And funnel cake is amazing, of course. Really can't go wrong there.)

  11. I just tried this fried cookie dough done wonton style today. I found it pretty disappointing, too, so now I'm on a mission to make it myself..."ball style!"

  12. @Dana: I'm sure they're far better that way!
